Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a Japanese martial art and combat sport characterized by two competitors, known as rikishi, who engage in a contest of strength and skill within a circular ring called a dohyo. The primary objective is to force an opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body, other than the soles of their feet, touch the ground. Sumo has deep cultural roots in Japan, dating back centuries, and includes various rituals and traditions, such as the pre-match salt purification and the ceremonial attire worn by wrestlers.

Athletes in sumo wrestling are categorized by weight classes, and bouts can be brief yet intense, requiring a combination of physical power, balance, technique, and strategy. Ranking systems exist, with top-ranked wrestlers known as yokozuna holding the highest honor. Sumo wrestling is not only a sport but also an important cultural event in Japan, celebrated through festivals and tournaments that attract spectators both domestically and internationally.
