Japanese Mythology

Japanese mythology refers to the traditional beliefs, stories, deities, and folklore of Japan. It encompasses a rich tapestry of myths, legends, and religious practices that have developed over centuries and are deeply intertwined with Shinto, Japan’s indigenous spirituality, as well as influences from Buddhism and other cultural interactions. Key elements include a pantheon of gods (kami), such as Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and Susanoo, the storm god, as well as numerous creation myths, heroic legends, and supernatural beings like yokai and tengu. Japanese mythology often explains the origins of the Japanese islands, the nature of humanity, and the relationship between the natural and spiritual worlds. These myths serve to convey moral lessons, cultural values, and the human experience, forming a foundational aspect of Japanese identity and cultural heritage.
